About the Music

A Year In The Life, the debut album from the Tom Smith Big Band, is a celebration of London’s thriving jazz scene, brimming with all-star talent and dynamic compositions by the award-winning saxophonist, composer and arranger. Smith’s original compositions draw inspiration from a diverse range of influences, including Maria Schneider, Pat Metheny, Carla Bley, Bill Frisell and Guy Barker, combining tradition with contemporary innovation and offering a fresh take on the big band genre.

As well as Smith on alto and soprano saxophones, the recording features established and emerging British talent: alto saxophone – Graeme Blevins and Sam Glaser; tenor saxophone – Alex Garnett and Paul Booth; baritone saxophone/bass clarinet – Jessamy Holder; trumpet/flugelhorn – Tom Walsh, George Hogg, Freddie Gavita, James Davison and Alistair Martin; trombone – Trevor Mires, Olli Martin and Dan Higham; bass trombone – Yusuf Narçin; piano – Will Barry; guitar – Jamie McCredie; drums – Luke Tomlinson; double bass/electric bass – Conor Chaplin; and Hammond Organ – Liam Dunachie.

Smith’s compositions on A Year In The Life celebrate the joy of making music in London, with each track telling a distinct story. The title track introduces the ensemble over an irresistible groove, culminating in a dynamic drum solo by Luke Tomlinson. Other highlights include the rollercoaster ride of ‘Speedboat In Trouble’, the introspective ‘Breathe’, the high-energy funk of ‘We’re Being Watched’, the rich brass arrangements of ‘Atlas’ and the joyous blues-drenched ‘Swansea Uproar’.

“I want the record to bring in people from outside the core jazz audience, so every time I write I try and have an image in my head – you should be able to close your eyes and see a scene,” comments Smith. “This band has all of my favourite people in it and I think it sounds like London – music everywhere and something new around every street corner!”
